  • After the first two US-based volumes the Bonehead Crunchers series moves to the UK to explore more pre-punk, glam and heavy boogie rock. Only 300 pressed so they say - I was quite pleased to get this from a record fair recently for £12.The best track appears to be Mississippi's 'Mr Union Railway Man', just that touch of echo on the vocals elevating it to a higher level. You could talk this stuff up and give it the 'junk-shop glam' or 'proto-punk' tags - but equally the whole vibe is perhaps more pub-rock... with even a touch of the working-men's clubs about it. A lot of the tracks are unintentionally hilarious... look at some of the song titles and band names. Unreconstructed stuff indeed. The twilight years of the early '70s are well served by this series of compilations though, presenting a cross-section of rough-edged grunt from the US, UK, Europe and in the last volume, number 5, Australia.I like these type of compilations. There's good, bad and ugly here. Not really recommending them as such - but a student of 60s/70s obscurities could do a lot worse than checking out the Bonehead Crunchers series.
